@shava444 Ash just clenched his fists as she took the jacket from him, his eyes immediately going down for a moment, not wanting to look, though it was at least a little bit better. “They were better quality of service.” Meaning they didn’t ban him from there because of his tendencies. Plus, he had important things to do and organizing the aisles wasn’t part of that job. He just wanted to be happy and be able to do things he needed to do despite whatever was going on in his head.
“… Just a little better. However, it isn’t just even numbered stalls. I’ve been banned from most places for ‘loitering’ when I’m just cleaning up their nasty, disorganized aisles.” His eyes dart up towards her and then back down.
“Why would you want to be distracting? I can’t even think knowing it looks like that. In a state like this, you’d want people to ignore you, wouldn’t you think?”

@shava444 It was hard not to notice her approaching. What, with such a distracting dress, did she expect to go unnoticed? It wasn’t what most people would notice, though. All that skin showing… No, Ashley was distracted by how unsymmetrical it was – it needed a lot of help. Quickly taking off his jacket just moments before she began to speak and after realizing she was stopping and going to talk to him, he attempted to cover her front with his jacket so it wouldn’t be quite so distracted, even if she wouldn’t allow him to cover her, he’d still try very hard. If she refused the jacket, he would be very fidgety and wouldn’t be able to stop himself from looking at her, and holding his hands out as if he were about to try to adjust her dress, before his hand would retreat like a mouse spotting a cat waiting for it to emerge from its hole in the wall.
Well, at least it wasn’t one of his kind – since she mentioned the cops caught him. Otherwise, she’d say ministry – if she were magical. And if it were magical and she a muggle, then the cops would likely have not caught him. Therefore, her status as magical or not was not yet established, but either way, this most definitely had to not be magical in origin. Which surprised him slightly – but it wasn’t a huge deal really. What mattered was the fact there were fifteen funerals and oh boy, one could see his hands twitching as he thought of such a terrible number to have been killed. Why couldn’t the guy have killed one less? Hell, even one more would be better than this! Zero would have been best, but this guy had absolutely no morals to kill such a terrible number of people.
“I shopped here often. It was… the best place to shop. I don’t know where to get my groceries now,” Ashley cocked his head looking at the building. “A-Are you sure it was fifteen? Not… fourteen or sixteen?” Oh boy, he was trying really hard not to let this get to him, but that was as if asking a fish to walk on land. “Perhaps maybe a rat died in the assault no one found o – or something.” Yes, he would find the rat who died. He would just need to get in there to find the body of the poor creature. Then there could be sixteen funerals – fifteen for the people and one for the rat, or whatever else may have died.
“Did… did you see it on the news? How are you sure there were fifteen?” |

@open Quite recently, just after he finally accepted the DADA position, he had been sent a note about a certain boy, Regulus Black, who apparently was suspected as a Death Eater. Seeing as Ashley Daines was once an Auror, he found it his duty to prove to the world whether he was a Death Eater or wasn’t a Death Eater. The mark had been proven not enough evidence, so there was no reason to even check really. People were known to be controlled and forced the mark onto them, which was awfully smart for Voldemort to do, in Ash’s opinion. It would help protect the loyal ones with the mark, but also create a panic of a sort in the minds of everyone around them. Who could be a death eater? They might not even have a mark – but those with the mark might not even be a Death Eater!
Regardless, Ashley knew the ministry couldn’t act on it – the Blacks were a prestigious family. Hell, the fact he accepted it was only bolstered by this new fact – he could watch little Regulus while he was in school. It wasn’t like Mr. Daines was worried about the curse – if he died, okay, not a huge deal. If he was somehow injured beyond repair, well that would suck, but at least he would be alive to find his wife’s killer. He suspected it was a Death Eater, but given he knew nothing about the story his wife had been working on, he didn’t know for sure – it could’ve been some random person who didn’t even mean to murder her (though his information said it wasn’t accidental, but that wasn’t a flawless assumption).
More to the point, Ashley Daines had travelled to France. While Regulus Black’s information was held by the ministry and largely unavailable to him, he hoped he could gain better insight into a certain relative of his – who was considered a very big suspect for Death Eater-y. Bellatrix Lestrange. She had married into a very well known French family, and that was why he was here today. To check the archives of the French Ministry, who he had already contacted and been granted access to the records (seems the French were worried about Voldemort even if they didn’t plan to interfere too much). It also helped that the family had fallen out of favor ever since the death of Leta Lestrange, the last pureblood line of the Lestranges. Rodolphus and Rabastan – technically purebloods, but the line was tainted somewhere along the way.
After strolling into the French Ministry, and giving his name, and reason for visiting, he made his way into the place. Boy, he liked it here a lot more. Cleaner. Whiter. One could see if it was dirty so much easier than the British Ministry.

@open Prior to deciding to take the job as the new DADA professor, though already approached to be such, Ashley Daines was taking a walk in London. Except for the fact he seemed to have stopped at one of the restaurants after seeing a busboy piling his dishes into his bin all wrong. Ash had rushed in, corrected the young boy, washed his hands thoroughly… and now found himself cleaning the tables and ordering them. However, after a patron pointed him out to the manager (‘that man over there is a fantastic worker, but he keeps mumbling things to himself and its scaring my daughter’), Mr. Daines was told to leave. After quickly moving a ketchup bottle on one of the tables into the perfect position, he left, his walk rigid.
Walking by a ‘closed’ sign, he quickly straightened it and sighed. He was never going to make it to the grocery store like this, but it wasn’t like he couple apparate to a muggle grocery store. He had to walk – especially since he did not know how to drive a car– nor did he ever want to learn how. Some might wonder why he would be going to a muggle grocery store, and the answer was fairly simple: the name of the store had 20 letters in it. A nice round number. The Leaky Cauldron had 16. Plus the place was always so dusty. Not only that, the owner of this store, a very nice muggle woman, knew him and didn’t mind him rearranging the can aisle. Of course, she always made sure her employees did their best, so he didn’t usually spend too much time, just moving a can or two here and there.
Making his way to the grocery store of his choice, he stopped by the door. Closed? Why was it closed? He narrowed his eyes tilting his head. Someone had walked by, noting his confusion. The muggle told him what happened: someone had killed the owner and many of its employees and customers. The cops had no idea what happened, nor how they had died. Then the muggle walked off. This was disconcerting. Could it have been the Death Eaters? Had they discovered his grocery store and wanted him to go hungry? No, that wouldn’t be it. He wasn’t that important.
Mr. Daines frowned, just standing in front of the building and frowning. He hadn’t been here for a month – and it hadn’t been much after he had been here when the attack happened. This day was just getting worse and worse by the second. Especially since soon a muggle man had walked by him, bumping into him slightly causing him to be very uncomfortable until he managed to whip out his wand and clean himself without being caught by anyone.

Caretaker Age Range: 25-40 Suggested FC: Margarita Levieva (Literally could be anyone you wanted though) Basically Ash needs someone to help take care of him, calm him down when he gets into a frenzy, help him out by getting foods and stuff. He can pay, and of course, have history with the caretaker, given he likely would have needed her (or him honestly would be fine) for the last five years. I would see them as very good friends, though if you want it could maybe turn into something romantic, but you'd have to be very patient with him, especially since he's very hung up on his late wife. Wife's Family
Jean Fairfield, of course, had family. When she first brought Ash home, they were uneasy about how he can be, since he would be obsessive over straightening things in the house and things like that, but they eventually found it charming.
He was very close with his in-laws, but hasn't seen them since Jean's death.
Therapist
Known him for several years, even before his wife died. This person really knows Ash very well, and they have two sessions a week. They also convinced him to agree to teaching DADA.

Ashley prefers to be called 'Ash' if one is not using his surname. If one uses his full first name he will shift uncomfortably and just look a bit distressed, so it isn't serious, other than the fact he will learn to avoid you. Ash is a very passive sort of person and rarely seems to get angry, though when he does, even then he is passive about it - he won't physically get active (partially because sweat is gross), but he will flick his wand and possibly injure you if you anger him. To do that, you would have to insult his deceased wife or someone he considers important to him. Insult him all you want, he'll just waddle away in normal circumstances, or give one detention when he's the professor at Hogwarts. He won't raise his voice, he'll just say 'detention, five o'clock' or 'five points'. He does apologize quite often when he knows he gets in the way of things - especially when its something he can't control and pertains to specific things discussed in the next paragraph.
Ash is a neat-freak. And when I say neat-freak, I mean, borderline OCD, should be put into a hospital type of neat-freak. Things that are not straight (physically, sexually he doesn't care if you're not straight) will bother him, even if it isn't in view because he will constantly think about it. And therefore he must straighten it - unless somehow he gets distracted by something he views as more important, though he would likely go back to whatever wasn't straight after he's done being distracted, given his memory is one of the best you could ever find. With his neat-freakery, he is a germaphobe and will refuse to shake hands and will flinch if someone touches him, and then sanitize himself after the contact is over. He'll refuse to step on cracks on the ground, sit on the ground, touch anything that was on the ground without being sanitized first... Essentially, if it could possibly be dirty he will very likely not touch it (unless he's distracted and afterwards he'll drop it and sanitize himself).
While a brilliant duelist and knowledge-seeker, these issues he has with the world around him, constantly being afraid of germs and sometimes even other people have prevented him from succeeding - especially since his wife died, as before that he could at least function in society. Regardless of this, he is a master of puzzles, being able to put together situations, understand people from small things they do, and of course complete even the hardest puzzles.
[attr="class","nodensright1"]SUBJECT BACKGROUND
[attr="class","nodensright21"] [attr="class","nodensright22"] Ever since he was little he was an odd little guy. His parents adopted him when he was less than a year old, having been unable to conceive themselves. They donned him with the name 'Ashley', which he always hated, but it was his name so he didn't complain about it. His biological parents were a muggle man and a witch, but his adoptive parents were both half-blood wizards. He grew up a brilliant young boy, though he was always afraid of just about everything. Things never clicked in his head, but his parents supported him and tried to make life as comfortable as possible for him. When he was 11 and he boarded the train, he brought along a full-body suit so he didn't have to sit on the dirty train seats. Full-Body. Yeah. When they tried to sort him, he jumped up several times before sitting down and then jumping up again. It was fairly comical to those watching but Ash was terrified. Eventually, he stayed still just barely long enough to be sorted before he jumped away and nearly cried from it. His Hogwarts years were fairly uneventful, he mostly did great in class, and the school knew about his weird antics. He didn't know it but there was a girl four years younger than him, Jean Fairfield, who had a huge crush on him when she was a first year and him a fifth year. After he graduated, he became an auror, finding that his talents would prove useful when it came to catching dark wizards. And honestly, he was fantastic. He was the ace, even if his antics and neat-freak tendencies tended to grate on nerves of those around him, but he got results. That was what mattered. He was a wonderful duelist who could catch a dark wizard without breaking a sweat. Finally when he was 24 years old, Jean Fairfield (played by Shelley Henning) had grown up as well. She was on a job, as she was a journalist for the Daily Prophet. She was investigating one of the dark wizards he was assigned to find. She interviewed him, and asked him out. He refused. He never really wanted to kiss or touch anyone, especially not - ugh - mate with someone. However, during the assignment, he would bump into her several times as she was conducting her own investigation, and despite him warning her it was dangerous she persisted. In the end, Ash was captured by the dark wizard, and Jean ended up swooping in and saving his little ass. After he cleaned himself majorly, he went to her flat to thank her. They ended up talking, even though it took some convincing and his own cleaning job for him to be willing to sit on the couch. He finally agreed to meet up with her. It took him a year to be willing to hold hands with her, three years for him to kiss her, and five years for him to eventually propose to her (he was 29 when they married). She was the love of his life, and she was so patient with him. He wasn't quite as terrible as he is now back then when it came to his neat-freakery. She brought out the best in him. Given the cruel world, of course, four years into the marriage, when she was off investigating one of her stories, she was killed by someone, but the culprit was never found and there was no evidence. He still tried his best to figure it out, but nothing came. He became recluse, not showing up for his job as an Auror. His superiors sent people to check on him, and in the end they 'let him go'. That was five years ago. During this time he has obsessed over finding her killer, despite there being nothing left to investigate, no clues left. He had money from his parents and saved up from when he was an active Auror to support himself, for food and various needs. This spring (1978), he was asked by Dumbledore to become the DADA professor, and his therapist told him he should take the job. It took a lot, but he eventually agreed. Because he did want to improve, and his therapist said this would be the best way to do it. |
