[googlefont=Montserrat:700,700i|Open+Sans:400,400i,700] [attr="class","angelonfire"] [attr="class","aofSidebar"] [attr="class","aofBody"] He scoffed and rolled his eyes. “People are only polite if they want something out of them. No matter how ‘nice’ someone is, there’s always a motive behind it. No one is selfless. Politeness is simply a façade.” He shook his head. Unlike Regulus he didn’t grow up in a high-born family and therefore learned very little about manners. The only ones he ‘learned’ were the times when his father would yell and hit him for doing something. But he didn’t respect his father, so there was no reason to use those things towards anyone else. He didn’t see the need. Perspectives.
He snickered. Too lazy to run? That was an interesting way of thinking. Too much work to stay out of it – he could agree. A neutral party would be difficult to swing in the current nature of the world. “I do almost envy those who can stay out of this… war. Morally I am bound to take a side – but if I was not, even then I would find it hard to not pick one… the mentality now is ‘if you’re not with us, you’re against us’ and that can be dangerous for anyone who tries to remain neutral in this situation.”
Severus narrowed his eyes and looked back a bit more to get a better view. “I was never one to really network, so perhaps. I’m not sure. I only paid attention to those who I felt deserved the attention.” He scrunched up his nose and then relaxed, shrugging a bit. “Hah… well, most people think I’m… odd for wishing such a thing. Most people think I would go into something more… ‘serious’. To me it would not be frivolous. While I may hate my muggle half – in a way it is a part of my identity, who I am. And so combining things from both worlds… that, I think, would be for the best.”

Manners will out.
And that might be the biggest difference between them. Because of his training, Regulus knew not only how to deal with the older generation better, but charm them even when being submissive. No, it wasn't something Serverus would understand that charm need, but Regulus felt he had the edge on his friend clearly there. This was not a competition however so he wasn't about to push it in the other's face, he'd just enjoy the advantage. A shrug instead of a verbal response was enough between the two of them anyway to show agreeing to disagree.
There was little time in life for trouble between those you considered a comrade.
"Very true. War is upon London and some people try and stick their heads in the sand. Choices avoided are mostly wasted time. Ignore politics and it won't ignore you." Lots of fools, few wise men. His friend's lack of networking didn't bother Regulus, though he thought it a major disadvantage. "I've learned a lot about how others think and who is weaker on family. It's a skill I find useful, more then networking. It has gotten me the attention I needed."
And the Dark Lord considered it a plus clearly. He needn't say any more about that.
The word 'serious' was not acceptable in his home naturally. It usually made Regulus winced a bit. "Very reasonable. Taking a person's background into account it always a sign of intelligence."

[googlefont=Montserrat:700,700i|Open+Sans:400,400i,700] [attr="class","angelonfire"] [attr="class","aofSidebar"] [attr="class","aofBody"] Different strokes for different folks, Severus thought. He wasn’t a nice person. He spoke his mind without regard to other people, unless he really cares deeply about them. Then again, why would he want to say something mean to them if he liked them? He just shrugged in response, seeing absolutely no need for him to worry about manners.
An eyebrow raised and soon Severus chuckled softly. “One has no right to complain about the world if they don’t try to do something to change it.” Nodding he thinks for a moment. He remembered thinking that about his mother – how she never tried to leave his father. But she never complained about it, though they did sometimes run off and have a day out. His mother just dealt with it. And he didn’t understand why. Perhaps it would be more painful to try – or perhaps she didn’t think it possible and thus wasted energy. “As you know, I’m more of a person who focuses on a small amount of people at a time. I can… manipulate as I see fit, make them trust me, even if I should not be trusted. Do things without regard to my own emotions, even if they go against what I currently wish. I can deal with cognitive dissonance if necessary. Become… someone else. Become someone who I am not.”
In a way, that made him specially built for the jobs he was looking to do – something many of the Death Eaters lacked. He could be subtle if he wanted, and he could change into a completely different person if necessary.
“Hmph.” He grunted and looked away for a moment, once more thinking, a pensive look on his face. “It is yes.” For a moment, he thought about how he really screwed that up when it came to Lily. “However, I would rather focus on specific people instead of becoming a jack of all trades but a master of none, when it comes to understanding people. The most important people I will put effort into and learn about their past and experiences and use it against them.”

Regulus nodded.
"It amuses me we're talking about changing the world while changing underthings. Wish it was as easy to change politicians..." Glad the underwear buying was finished at least; one task completed! "I suspect in every generation though more then half the population just wants to be left alone to daily life and only a few become active proponents in the way things run."
A shrug and a wave at the windows out on the street. "Most of those won't complain at all as long as they don't feel they are being affected by the government." Listening to Snape's comments he thought about it. Slowly. "Self-transformation." Yes, it was attractive in it's own way. Becoming what you were meant to be, very important.
He made sure to remember her face and location in case he remembered why she was connected later.
"Craftsmanship, one soul at a time you mean." No, that was the old way he knew. The new world would need quicker responses over a wider field. Otherwise constantly falling behind would be the norm. Regulus didn't think that way was the best, though he did admire it's final product.

[googlefont=Montserrat:700,700i|Open+Sans:400,400i,700] [attr="class","angelonfire"] [attr="class","aofSidebar"] [attr="class","aofBody"] “Politicians are greedy assholes who are just in it for the money and power. They’ll do whatever they want without regard to others as long as it keeps them in power.” He scowled thinking about how the ministry was – and how corrupt he viewed it.
“I do agree most people only care about one or two big things, and they’re willing to sacrifice other things so they could have those one or two things. It’s nonsense. You can have it all if you just try. You can have more if you focus on everything. To fight.” Severus shook his head. He didn’t understand why people just stood by and did nothing while the world fell apart around them as long as they get their taxes cut or something like that. Depended on the person.
“Yes, of course. If you focus on everyone in the world, then you’ll make many more mistakes. Instead, focus on the important people. A random cashier will not change the world if you just happen to remember her name and maybe a few things she likes.”

Regulus, having been raised in the top twenty-six, was far more steeped in understanding politics then most students. Most of the time he would rather stay out of it really, but Severus certainly brought it to the fore. "Money is the root of it. Most only want the power to get more cash flow. It's the trading of secrets and money in the background which causes most of the quote unquote progress is in our society. The richest therefore control the most of it, hence our current mire." And if the Dark Lord really wanted progress he's get his servants to do more bribery then anything else.
What did it say to him then that it wasn't showing many signs of that sort of progress? That the Dark Lord was not proficient in the manipulation of politics, just people? Quite possibly. Since Regulus had no idea how the man had been raised, there was likely not an early trainning in politics, just an outsiders view of it which could be a weakness in policy not that he would bring it up. Still, it was something to remember. On his companions other point Regulus heartily disagreed, but it was a big DE point. So far he had managed to avoid getting pulled into that discussion!
"Well, fighting will get you the initiative and that can be used certainly, but there is a limit to what one can control as well. Until we have all the big families on board, control will elude us I believe." There, that was safe enough. If Regulus was in charge, a much smaller section of the country could be controlled much easier and more completely and never rise to the political scene to begin with. Even the muggle mafia understood that lessons and exploited it better then most.
Short sighted, he didn't say.
"Ah but you forget, Serverus, that is my job. Turning the children to control the future. I need to follow up on faces in hopes of finding the dirt needed for progress in the long run. I'm not free to do the higher level stuff yet, not for another year. I need to work on this level." And every face he found significant could be a major thread in the tapestry.

[googlefont=Montserrat:700,700i|Open+Sans:400,400i,700] [attr="class","angelonfire"] [attr="class","aofSidebar"] @shava [attr="class","aofBody"] Severus nodded, though he hated it. Money corrupted them. Money was the root cause of all this. Money was the cause of his father being an asshole too. If he trapped his mother and made her subservient, then he could be the breadwinner. No, that was going a bit too far, there was obviously more to his father’s evil. “I know that Malfoy is working on that part of it. He’s got himself several politicians in his pockets.”
He had to admit, Regulus was right, the big families needed to be on board. All of them. The big 28. It would do well to even have some blood traitor families on board, though those would be much harder. And much more unlikely to ever be able to convince. “Unfortunately I think that’s true.” People like him didn’t matter. His family wasn’t well known, or well thought of really. Even if his mother’s family was well thought of, he had his muggle father’s name. It served to him as a constant reminder of his father, to keep his name instead of changing it. Sure, he still called himself the Half-Blood Prince, but very few people knew of that title.
“True. You do have a more… important job right now, before getting to fry the bigger fish. You’ll groom people to perform your own job in the future, and so on, so forth.” Much like he had to do while he was still had school. “Next year. Next year you’ll understand and have to perform much like I do. Though likely not exactly the same. My talents are far different than your talents too.”

Malfoy. Yes, that fit. Regulus didn't really meet with him often even in school as he was always working on others for the long run game like his father, but Regulus was (one could say) a given. "Yes well that fits all too easily." He didn't need to say any more; while he and other heirs might have been taught some of the economics and political working, Malfoy had been raised in it and he desire power and money the same. Like a marriage really.
"That's just government. It's the same in many places. Father is particular about my understanding the variances." Which most of the wizarding world educations (private and Hogwarts) skipped completely. Regulus was surprised the economic system had not adapted much yet either. Gringotts was way behind the place he thought they should be! Regulus, unaware of Snape's personal title, had wondered before about the name. He'd just never been curious enough to follow up.
Regulus was a little more modest then Malfoy was. "Well only in the long term. Once I'm out of school I am sure I disagreeignments will change a lot. I just get to set some things up. I've had a few ideas about that anyway." he got the point thought easily. "Different styles as well. I'm sure it will get interesting."

[googlefont=Montserrat:700,700i|Open+Sans:400,400i,700] [attr="class","angelonfire"] [attr="class","aofSidebar"] [attr="class","aofBody"] Indeed, it was very simply something Lucius was good at. Using his money, bribing, threatening. He was powerful, yes, but his talents were needed where he was at – they had plenty of good fighters already, but Lucius had his money and his persuasiveness, and those were harder to find. Severus himself would not want to get in a duel with Lucius – even with his own magical skills, and his own spells under his sleeve no one else had ever heard of. After Levicorpus became common knowledge and his own spell was used against him, well, he kept his spells under a tight leash.
“Unfortunately,” He sighed and shook his head. “It would be nice if the government would just let us do what we wanted, and only control the complete basics, such as murder. And even then, some murder would be needed for those defending themselves. Otherwise, they should stay out of our business. So long as we aren’t bothering other wizards, we should do what we want.” Yet they continually let wizards be mistreated and then go around helping muggles who weren’t even their responsibility other than keeping them under foot. Why was the government bent on having their laws apply to the muggles, but not the muggles having to follow their laws?
“Indeed. I wish you luck on your endeavors.”

As Serverus spouted the line they were taught, Regulus nodded, but said nothing. The idea of some murder being needed bothered him on a government operation level, not as much morals. Should murder really be an acceptable thing? Of course for his Master he had little choice and would do as expected. But if the Ministry caught him he would go to prison. Was that wrong? He wasn't sure his friend's position was actually an acceptable one in the way stated, but he had never really considered it before.
Regulus frowned, but set the matter aside for later thinking.
"As father has told me all my life, life is not meant to be fair." It was those challenges and the way you dealt with those difficulties against your intension that made you the person you were. Regulus just had his Mother hexing him to deal with and not mind. "We all deal with life as it comes at us. The number of choices is simply unlimited." A nod as his friend spoke about his best wishes for his assignment.
"Yes, I will take that thank you. I feel some students are going to be a distinctive challenge. In return I wish you the best in your own 'endeavors' but alas I think I'd better go back before she comes looking."

[googlefont=Montserrat:700,700i|Open+Sans:400,400i,700] [attr="class","angelonfire"] [attr="class","aofSidebar"] @shava [attr="class","aofBody"] Life is not meant to be fair. Well, it definitely wasn’t fair. But at least to Severus he felt that he should be able to get what he wanted if he fought for it, everyone else be damned. He shouldn’t have had to stay in that house for as long as he did. His mother shouldn’t have had to die because of his father. His father should have been taken out long ago.
“Perhaps. But sometimes you cannot make a certain choice. Or you are given such dire consequences for what should be right you cannot do what you believe to be right else you’re punished severely. Then again, I suppose that would be your choice to not want the punishment.” He shrugged and sighed. “However, I can agree the future is based upon our decisions. And we have to weigh the consequences for what we could have as a result.”
Nodding he looked away from Regulus for a moment. “Of course. I shall be seeing you later. Hopefully. I will likely be busy for a while. I do… value our friendship.” With that Severus walked off, leaving Regulus behind.
